There were three games on Friday, with Atlanta Silverbacks getting the better of Southern Derby rivals Charleston after 2-1 home win. Ansu Toure scored Atlanta's first-half winner before the talented Liberian received a red card in the second half. Puerto Rico missed the chance to take advantage of Charleston's slip-up when it fell 2-1 at home to Seattle Sounders. Josh Gardner scored Seattle's winner in the Caribbean. Those two results welcome news for Vancouver, as three first-half goals gave the Whitecaps a 3-2 win at Carolina RailHawks, despite Japanese fullback Takashi Hirano receiving a red card at WakeMed Soccer Park.

The winning goal came late in the first half as Eduardo Sebrango struck his team-leading eighth goal of the season. The win came despite Vancouver playing the second half with 10 men after left fullback Takashi Hirano was sent off just before halftime.

With three players in Justin Moose, Takashi Hirano, and Alfredo Valente all suspended for Sunday's game, Whitecaps head coach Teitur Thordarson made two changes to his starting XI versus the Battery. Vicente Arze came into the left side of midfield for Valente, while striker Nicholas Addlery played on the right side of midfield for Vancouver. That saw Steve Kindel drop to his familiar position of left fullback in place of the suspended Hirano.
