JIM O’BRIEN arrived in Denver with Celtic last night, aiming to show manager Gordon Strachan that he can be more than an able deputy for playmaker Shunsuke Nakamura.

The Hoops youngster, fresh from a loan spell with Dunfermline last season, filled the Japanese star’s usual right-midfield berth against Peterborough United on Friday night and grabbed a stunning goal in the 2-1 win.

That strike capped off a hugely-promising performance from O’Brien and, with Naka on Asian Cup duty, the 19-year-old hopes to be given the chance to shine once again during Celtic’s week-long US stay.

“Competition is massive just now and Nakamura isn't even here," said the Celtic Youth Academy graduate. "You only have to see who is on the sidelines in these games to see the strength in depth we have.

“I know I can't really be chapping on the manager's door saying I want to play ahead of Nakamura. He won player of the year awards from everyone, but hopefully I offer something different.

"Nakamura played every game in my position, but he is a left-footed midfielder. I'm more of a winger and hopefully I can be the one who the manager can throw on when he wants to change things.

“I feel I am an alternative for Naka and that is all I am hoping for."
