In many ways, this month’s tournament will be a step into the unknown for the young players who will face Japan, Costa Rica and Nigeria in Group F.

“We’re all looking forward to our first game against Japan,” said Fox, “and I think we all realise that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a chance to test ourselves against some of the world’s best young players.

“Our opening game against Japan is going to be a tricky one and from watching Naka play here, I think we are going to come up against a team who are skilful and very technically talented.

After leaving Glasgow the Scots will immediately begin preparations for their opening group game against Japan this Sunday (July 1) in Victoria.

“It’s important to not lose the first match in a tournament,” added U20 coach Tommy Wilson. “The three teams we face were all equally successful in their qualification groups, but we will focus on Japan. It would be great to beat them, but they are very good opponents.”
