With the sun shining on Celtic Park and the supporters in fine voice in the lead-up to kick-off, this felt like a day of celebration from the off and there was even a freedom about Celtic’s play as they knocked the ball about comfortably in the opening stages, with Shunsuke Nakamura and Jiri Jarosik on target with long-range attempts and an Aiden McGeady effort deflected over the crossbar.

Celtic’s assuredness no doubt stemmed from the fact that the pressures of the season had effectively been lifted by Shunsuke Nakamura’s 92nd minute strike last Sunday and there was also a noticeable sense of composure in a defence that included debutant right-back Jean Joel Perrier-Doumbe, making his first start since his January loan move from Rennes.

Meanwhile Stephen McManus squandered an excellent chance to open the scoring from a Nakamura corner, sending his near-post header spinning over, before Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink nodded an attempt of his own straight at Craig Gordon.

This pattern continued after the interval with Celtic apparently in full control as Nakamura came close with a free-kick from over 25 yards out and Paul Hartley came within a hair’s breadth of connecting with a ball lifted tantalisingly into his path at the back post.

The killer ball for the goal was delivered by Nakamura, so often the inspirational force in this championship-winning side, and it was met by Steven Pressley just seven yards out and powered past his former team-mate.
